Purchased modem because of reviews and personal recommendation of friend. Modem was shipped promptly but due to an apparent ethernet port malfunction, it would not connect to the internet. It was shipped back to sender IAW instructions.
The SB5120 was easy to setup and has been working just fine ever since I gave my provider the MAC address.
Modem hooked up easily and works fine. I wanted to have a spare and a backup incase of failures since i work from home and this is it.Does as advertised.
In fact, after two subsequent computer replacements, reactivation of the modem has been without incident. The installation process is really as simple as taking out of the box and plugging it in.
As it is no longer manufactured by Motorola, I have no idea what I will do if it ever needs to be replaced. The SB5101 is the presumptive replacement however it has a different chipset and I don't necessary accept the premise performance will be the same.
This modem has performed admirably for over 4 years with three different cable networks in two different cities. Once that unit was replaced by the SB5120, our difficulties were eliminated.
I have a Broadcom wireless adapter (manufacturer of SB5101 chipset) that requires frequent resets and in the time I have owned this modem (with TI chipset) I can't recall any instances where unanticipated reset was required. At another location I had VOIP service routed through a competitive product and consistently encountered connectivity issues.
With utilization of Comcast's self install CD, I did not have to contact the company and provide the MAC ID. While I cannot be sure it will be upgradeable USB 3.0, as an user of the ethernet port exclusively, it's a minor concern.
In addition, package received is incomplete, missing CD claimed. I tried twice with the cable company to hook this modem to the internet. It turned out to be a defective one. Seller is not willing to refund. My recommendation: not to buy from private sellers with limited reviews only.
